Turn a clear photo into a moving sketch.
Photographs are the hardest input because every strand, shadow, leaf, and compression block can become an edge. A little preparation matters more than adding an AI model.
Crop for one subject
Fill the frame with the subject and remove empty context that does not help the story. A plain wall or shallow depth of field produces calmer outlines than foliage or a crowded room.
Use Clean line art first. Switch to Textured pencil when the face needs more tonal shape.
Control contrast
Very flat light produces weak edges; harsh speckled light produces too many. Moderate, directional light with a distinct silhouette is easiest to abstract.
Simplify colors smooths and quantizes small colour differences when the source looks too photographic.
Know the limit
A local edge pipeline does not understand that an eye matters more than a shirt wrinkle. Complex portraits may still look busier than results from a neural line-art model.
The tradeoff is privacy, immediate use, and zero model cost.

Hair contains many high-contrast boundaries. Use a simpler source, crop closer, or try the pencil treatment so those marks feel intentional.
